Content
The lyrics chronicle a lost promise; the singer talks about how a relationship failed and he wonders "how the hell'd we wind up like this". He wishes that they could discuss their issues and that the relationship will come back someday, but that someday never comes.

Music video
In the music video, we get the same impression that the song is about a failed relationship. The boyfriend is played by Clint Carleton, and the girlfriend is played by Daniella Evangelista. Daniella bursts into tears after reading a newspaper, and frantically packs a suitcase with clothes. Clint tries to stop her from leaving, but she brushes him off and runs out crying. As she leaves the house with the suitcase (echoing the lyrics "I wish you'd [...] unpack your suitcase"), we see Clint stepping in spilled milk without leaving any traces or footprints. Daniella gets into a brown Jeep Cherokee and drives away, still crying, with Clint running after her. She looks in the rear-view mirror, but she can only see an empty street where Clint was. He is still chasing her, though, and almost catches up to her, but she runs a red light and a large truck smashes into the side of the Jeep. Clint sees that there is no way she could have survived, and starts crying, only to see the ghost of Daniella materialize and walk toward him, smiling. The two reunite with tearful hugs and they walk away together. As they pass a newspaper vending machine, we see the news headline Daniella was reading at the beginning, revealing that Clint died in a bridge accident the day before. This implies that he was actually a ghost throughout the video, which is why he didn't leave tracks in the milk and why she couldn't see him in the mirror.
Throughout the video, shots are interspersed of the band playing the song in a glass-walled warehouse.
There is also an alternate ending for the video, in which Daniella walks away from the accident alive and unharmed instead of dying and returning as a ghost. Clint then hugs her from behind, but he then disappears as she walks away, still implying that he is a ghost. She walks past the vending machine alone, and the headline is revealed as before.
